Never Out of Harm's Way By Joan Sheldon One day this past summer when the temperature & humidity made the day very hot One of our fellow league members hit what I can only describe as an interesting shot But it’s not only the shot that could be considered one of a kind It’s the reaction or lack thereof of the rest of her foursome that make it stand out in my mind I’m sure when the group first teed off, staying cool and playing well were 2 of their goals And they managed to do this through the first 13 holes But then they came to the 14th and though it started it fine The trouble began just a few shots down the line Two of the group hit their shots over the water and thinking they were safe and sound Got into their cart and drove off ahead hoping some shade could be found As they drove away, the third player prepared for her shot and though her aim was straight and true The actual shot was a little offline and into the front compartment of the moving golf cart the ball flew Now you’d think a golf ball flying into your cart would be something you wouldn’t miss But what actually happened was later relayed to me something like this First the ball hit off the leg of the cart passenger but she never reacted at all This was because she thought she had been hit by a falling pinecone and not a golf ball And the driver of the cart just kept driving merrily along Till she finally noticed an extra golf ball rattling around in the cart and figured something was wrong And now the fun started as the foursome tried to determine what they should do Was there a golf rule that covered this ? – none of them knew I’m sure the discussion that followed must have been quite a sight But they made a decision and though hard to believe – they got it right Now I was going to keep the players’ names quiet but then figured when all’s said and done Awarding them some well-deserved prizes would be a whole lot more fun So to Pat Kemper who hit the shot I present golf balls and a compass so from now on you’ll know The actual direction that your golf shots should go To Grace Davis who was the passenger in the moving golf cart I present golf balls and a pinecone and hope in the future you can tell them apart To Dot Franco, the driver, I present golf balls and blinders like those you must have had covering your eyes If finding an extra golf ball in the front of your cart came to you as such a surprise Now Dot Ellison was an innocent bystander in this event but I think you’ll all agree That she also deserves some golf balls as a reward for playing with those other three Now let this be a lesson to all of us when we go out to play No matter where we stand or put our golf cart we are never out of harm’s way |
